In the late nineteenth century, because the economy developed rapidly, a mouern ocnsumption society gradually rose and developed in the United States. Consumption came to be the foundation of a distinct American lifestyle and popular culture. However, a man's role, as a consumer, was generally ignored by the people, who believed that consumption was a feminine phenomenon in general. In this consumer-led society, American men inevitably were drawn into the realm of consumption. As the twentieth century progressed, American men became a part of consumer society as well as women. Male consumers were gradually being accepted by the American society.
