Prof.Zhan,53,is an atomic physicist.He graduated from the Department of Modern Physics, Lanzhou University in 1982. Then,he started his research career at the CAS Institute of Modern Physics(IMP).As a visiting scholar,he conducted studies at GANIL in France from 1986 to 1988 and at Columbia University(also at BNL and LBNL)in US from 1991

He served as vice directorgeneral and then director-general of IMP, and vice director of the National Laboratory of Heavy Ion Accelerator in Lanzhou. He was elected a CAS Member in 2005.
