大众音乐即广泛地流传于民间的音乐,它存在于各个历史时期,其内容与形式都随社会变革而发生着变化,但其"大众性"的基本原则和宗旨是始终不变的。面向社会、面向大众、传播速度快、传播面广泛是大众音乐突出的特点。非大众音乐是指历史上的"宫廷音乐"与现当代的"学院派音乐"。它们各有特点,彼此之间既各自独立,又有内在联系。研究大众音乐与非大众音乐的范畴、特点、发展概况等,对促进当代大众音乐的发展有着深刻而积极的意义。

Popular music circulates among the masses, and its contents and forms will change along with society. Non-popular music refers to “court music” in ancient China and “academic music” in modern China. The two types of music are both independent and interrelated. The study of their categories and characteristics is very important to the development of popular music at present.
