自Grice区分自然意义与非自然意义至今已有60余载,但学界对这两个概念的争鸣不仅从未停止,反而随着后格赖斯研究的深入进行而突显出来。概括起来,争议集中在:是否确实存在自然意义和非自然意义?如果存在,它们是否可以穷尽意义的划分?它们各是什么?对于这些问题的理解是研究后格赖斯意义和交际理论的前提。

Grice proposes that intentionality is the crucial demarcation line between natural and non-natural meaning. Scholarly counter-arguments are that all meaning is natural,or that all meaning is non-natural,or that between the two categories should be inserted a new one of ostensively-used natural code meaning. This paper has however argued that Griee＇s two categories are of two distinct levels incapable of comparison.
