The Image of General Guan Yu in the Eyes of Joseon Envoys to Yenching

朝鲜朝燕行使者眼中的关羽是一个忠义、勇武的形象,这既是他们通过实际观察中国关庙的楹联、题额与塑像、庙制而得出的结果,更是朝鲜民族社会总体想象的集中体现。但与此同时,他们也发现,关羽形象在中国出现了"异化"了的现象,这主要不是指人们狂热地崇拜关羽,而是指人们对关羽的崇拜出现了泛化的倾向。

Guan Yu, a famous general in the Three Kingdoms period in China, is a righteous,loyal and brave hero in the eyes of Joseon envoys to Yenching in the 18th century. This not only results from their inspection of the carved couplets,inscribed boards and statues at General Guan Yu＇s Temple, but also reflects the imagination of the whole Korean community. Those envoys have also discovered that the image of General Guan Yu has been alienated. In fact, a blind worship of Guan Yu is offered and a generalized tendency toward the image appears.
