The global seismicity during the first quarter of the year 1997 was slightly lower than medium level, with fewer earthquakes occurring in the world and with lower intensity. The seismicity in the Eurasian seismic belt relatively increased, with 7 moderate and strong earthquakes taking place. Since June 1994, the global seismic period has lasted for 3 years. During the period, altogether 38 earth- quakes of magnitude over 7 took place in the world, showing the tendency of seismicity decreasing.
