University President and World-Class University Building,with Special Reference to Berkeley

摘要世界一流大学建设过程中,校长起着至关重要的作用。本文分析了伯克利加州大学20世纪初至50年代迅速崛起时期,两位校长的一些治校举措及其起到的重要作用。他们有极强的管理才能、赋有战略的眼光和先进的治校理念;始终把争取资金作为自己重要的任务;在重大事件上把握方向。 University president plays a critical role in the process of building the world-class university. This paper analyses the major institutional strategies and their impact of two Berkeley presidents during the rapid rise of the University from 1920s to 1950s. The characteristics the two presidents shared are as the following., strong leadership skills, strategic far-sightedness and advanced ideas in institutional governance; always regarding fundraising for the University as a key task of their own; steering firmly in vital events, especially in terms of hiring talent and choosing academic development direction, and of accurate and timely decision-making in other key events.
