Born of the noble merchant of the Qu clan in Qixian county, QU Ben - qiao read through The Five Classics ( The Book of Songs, The Book of History and The Book of Changes, The Book of Rites and The Spring and Autumn Annals ) & The Four Books ( The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, The Confucian Analects , and The Works of Mencius ). He succeeded in his imperial competitive examinations as Xiucal (one who passed the imperial examination at the county level in the Ming and Qing dynasties), Juren (a successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the provincial level), and Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial; examinations). He ever served as an official for the Royal Court, from head of the secretariat, Chinese Consul in Yokohama Japan to Scholar of the Ceremony Court. But he didn't act as what he was, who devoted his short stretch of over 20 years of social activities, his knowledge and the immense amount of capital of his family to modem education and industry badly needed by poor and backward China. Qu Ben - qiao was one of the few heroes in the great merchants, who contributed his capital, his knowledge to founding Chinese modem industry and modem education, and was well worth studying and commemorating.
