以往的研究都认为施蛰存的《将军底头》是一篇历史小说,作家将弗洛伊德的精神分析学纯熟地运用其中,剖析了历史人物在情欲与理性的双重冲突下灵魂的搏斗。笔者以为,以往的研究还停留在弗氏学说的表面,没有结合文本深入到小说中的隐喻层面进行更加细致的挖掘。《将军底头》是一篇关于中国式的俄狄浦斯情结的性寓言,具体说来它是五四时期现代知识分子内心深处阉割焦虑的一种隐喻化表达。巴金的《家》、《憩园》和曹禺的《雷雨》都是这种儿子阉割焦虑的互文性表达。
