Coincided with worldwide sustainable development, the construction of social welfare housing should aim at such features as green, energy-efficiency, comfort for living and a reasonable price. In the paper, the policy background, architectural designing characteristics, means for green techniques together with statistics for practical energy efficiency of ＇Living at the sun＇ （designed by Peter Lorenz, in Tyrol, Austria）, a social welfare project in Austria is presented in detail. It is expected to provide some helpful reference for the construction of social welfare housing in China.
