We investigated the effects of mild postischemic hypothermia on behavior and neurophathologic outcome in rats. Three groups of animals were investigated:(1) rates subjected to 10 min of four vessel occlusion(4VO) under normothermia;(2)rats subjected to 10min of 4VO followed by 33°C hypothermic reperfusion for 3h; (3) control rats not subjected to ischemia. The scoring scale of brain injury and water maze test showed that there were more severe behavioral deficits in normothemic rats. The percentage of necrotic neurons in CA 1 was analysed 7 days after ischemia. Hypothermic rats exhibited significantly lower necrotic neurons(38 9%) in CA 1 compared to the normothermic rats (91 7%).The results indicate that mild postischemic hypothermia provide protection from behavioral deficits and neuronal injury following transient global cerebral ischemia.
