《边城》中以"水"为中心的意象系统传达了中华民族传统文化中的道家精神和生命的意义,由此可窥见作家沈从文在小说中欲探索的一种"优美、健康、自然,而又不悖乎人性的人生形式"所包孕的文化内涵;而《雪国》中以"雪"为中心的意象系统则彰显了日本民族文化中的禅宗思想,濡染了日本文化所独有的"物哀"、"幽玄"的美学风格,显示出川端康成对生命的独特探索。
The image of water in The Bordering Town conveys the Taoism and the meaning of life in traditional Chinese culture. The writer, Shen Congwen, wants to explore a cultural connotation of “beautiful, healthy, and natural way of life in harmony with human nature.” The image of snow in The Snow Country embodies the ideology of Zen, and reveals an aesthetic style of grief and serene unique to Japanese culture. Yasunari Kawabata presents his own exploration of life in this novel.
