Some say Luoyang Soup Banquet originated from the Buddhist temple of Tang Dynasty, some say it from the story of Wu Zetian eating turnip. There are some records of the food of Luoyang in the literature of Tang Dynasty, but Luoyang Soup Banquet cannot be found in the records, and the saying is lack of reason. It is supposed that the local farmers used starch from sweet potato to make different shapes of food, which were used as basic ingredient, matched with meat, and cooked in various ways to serve successively on the table to treat the guests. For most of the dishes were soups, and later through the long run of remolding, it became a tradition, and the banquet was named soup banquet. Sweet potato was introduced to China in Ming Dynasty; therefore, it is impossible that the Luoyang Soup Banquet was originated from Tang Dynasty.
