中国古典戏剧、小说都是在18世纪欧洲"中国热"的历史大潮中,被引进法国的。19世纪是法国汉学家译介、研究中国戏剧的自觉时期;中国古典戏剧担当了中西(中法)文化和文学交流的先锋角色;19世纪法国汉学界引进中国小说,以传奇、才子佳人小说为主,20世纪突破了这一单一化格局,注重于长篇巨制的翻译介绍,以小说作为认识中国文明不可或缺的参照,表现出更多的自觉和活力。但它们承袭的依然是前辈所确立的纯文学的文化观照传统。对中国白话小说发展史的探索,以都市文化视角来审视中国白话小说的兴盛、发展,是20世纪法国汉学家对中国小说研究最具理论功底和学术价值的方面。

Classic dramas and novels of China were introduced to France in the 18th century when sinomania prevailed in Europe. The 19th century witnessed the consciousness of translation and studying among French sinologists, and classic dramas pioneered in the cultural and literature exchanges between China and western countries （France in particular）. Romantic Novels and Novels of Genius and Beauty were the most favored ones by French sinologists in that century. However, the 20th century experienced a breakthrough in the simplification, and saga novels were introduced and translated. Novels were then considered to be the indispensable parts for the reference of China＇s civilization.
