"运河通,济宁兴,河运废,济宁衰"阐明了运河与济宁的经济社会生活等方面的关系。自元修复大运河以来,济宁发挥了在河运中的有效作用,成为运河上的枢纽——货物转运商品交易之地,络绎不绝的人群繁荣了济宁的商贸业、饮食业等服务业。可知冷落的旧济宁,自水运开通后变成水陆通衢、商贾云集的新州城了。

This sentence tells people the relationship between the Great Canal and economy and social life of Jining. When the Great Canal had been built in Yuan Dynasty, the Great Canal in Jining played an efficient part in the river transportaiions. Jining became an important center which was a place of goods transportations and commodity deals, more and more people developed business and the service industry such as the diet line. We can see that Jining which was rather undeveloped, became a new city which owned comfortable transportations and many businessmen after the Great Canal had been built.
