The birth of the Internet has given rise to a new register - netspeak. One distinctive feature of netspeak lies in the large amount of abbreviated terms including acronyms. There are mainly two explanations on the function of such abbreviated terms: one is to be concise and thus meet the need of fast-paced online communication; the other is to be used as euphemisms and replacement for taboo words. However, there is still a third function that has been largely neglected as to certain acronyms in netspeak they are used as a form of postmodern word-play to deconstruct certain classic forms of expression. By revealing the incentive that has led to the creation and popularization of such word-play terms in netspeak, the paper intends to help people achieve a better understanding of the influence of postmodern culture towards language use and adopt the right attitude toward netspeak.
