This paper intends to trace back to the philosophical foundations of the speech act theory from the perspective of linguistic philosophy. It begins with the theoretical contributions by the earlier scholars, discussing the characteristics of ordinary language philosophy and the philosophical sources of the speech act theory. The author also agrees that the procedures and methodology adopted by the speech act theorists were fundamentally influenced by those of linguistic phenomenology. The paper ends with the overview of the philosophical significance reflected in the speech act theory and the positive comments on the originality of the theory in view of its re-promotion of the language turn in philosophy.
