Many observations showed that persistent GBV-C viremia could take beneficial effects on HIV-1 survival. The protection mechanisms of GBV-C on HIV-1 are very little known, some researchers beheve that perhaps GBV-C can regulate the secretion and expression of chemokines and cytokines or their equivalent receptors in HIV-1 patients. Contrary to these, some investigations don't indicate GBV-C co-infection Can take advantageous effects on the disease progression of HIV-1 patients. In this article, we review the epidemic character of HIV-1/GBV-C co-infection, the effect of co-infection on the disease progress and the role of GBV-C infection on AIDS outcome.
