Following the fast urbanization progress, the environment in old cities continue to vanish. As new concrete structures begin to dominate the skylines of the vast number of cities in China, traditional lifestyle is also being redefined in a dramatic manner. Fading memories of the past can only be found deep beneath piles of nostalgic photos. The author argues that urban renovation should be carried out gradually in a way that best inherits the underlying tone of the existing urban landscape. Only by this way could cities retain their intrinsic cultural identity, thereby embracing modern urban development as a contemporary element of their continuing evolution and creating "living" architecture.
