In Hardy＇ s novels a massive use of coincidences has been employed to spur the development of the plot. The comprehesive application of coincidental factors render the plot rhythmic and elastic beauty, thus creating the superb aesthetic tragic rhythm. This paper analyzes the artistic effect of the coincidences in Hardy＇ s novel The Reture of the Native through the surface structure of the text.
