The “Brain” is the nickname given to the new Philological Libray which opened its doors in September 2005 at Free University, Berlin. The name does not refer to the use of the building but rather to its exterior and interior form. Not immediately, but upon closer inspection, the outer shell resembles a cranium, the interior with its curved balconies is reminiscent of brain convolutions. Not only is the “Brain” wearing a nickname. The large structure surrounding it, bears a nickname since decades: The new library can only be understood within the context of its surrounding structure, the “Rostlaube” (rust bucket).
