许多国际学生选择寄宿(Homestay)在当地居民家生活。与当地居民的交流是推动文化学习的关键,这是留学生选择寄宿生活的主要原因之一,同时与当地居民在文化上密切的社会交往会形成积极的人际关系和对异域生活产生良好的适应作用。作者从留学生的角度探讨了国际学生在寄宿家庭生活中遇到的思乡、语言障碍、生活文化差异等主要问题,肯定了在应对这些问题时积极交流所起的作用。成功的交流需要交流过程中的自我反思意识。

Many international students lodge with local families. Communication has been found to be central in facilitating culture learning. Close social interaction with people in the host culture has also been found to lead to positive stranger-host relations and better adaptation in another culture. The fact that students expect to experience and learn about the local culture and customs is one of the reasons why they choose to lodge with the local families. The main problems the international students may encounter in host families are discussed, such as homesickness, language obstacles, cultural gap and so on. The role active communications play in coping with these problems is recognised. Successful communications also require understanding the process of communication in a self-reflective way.
