土家族、苗族、侗族至迟在二千年前就生息繁衍在湘西这片神奇的土地上,具有相同或相似的婚恋观及婚恋习俗:同姓不婚,姨表不婚;自由恋爱,忠贞爱情;尊崇女性,男女平等。"姨表不婚"为提高人口素质打下了良好的基础;不重彩礼、忠贞爱情可引导人们认识包办婚姻、买卖婚姻的危害;"尊崇女性、男女平等"对提高妇女地位和民族素质以及促进社会进步都有长远意义。当然,还有"舅霸姑婚"的习俗,但部分地区在近200年前就将此俗彻底革除了。

The Minority Nationalities of Tujia, Miao and Dong have lived and multiplied on this magical land of West Hunan for 2. 000 years at least. They have nearly the same views and customs of marriage-love： （1） no isonymous marriage or maternal marriage： （2） the free loving way, and loyalty to each other： （3） respecting woman, equality of man and woman. ＂No maternal marriage＂ has laid good foundation in increasing the quality of people ： ＂valuing loyalty and love instead of dowry＂ may lead people understanding the damage of the arranged and mercenary marriage： ＇＂ respecting woman . and equalities of man and woman＂ is of far-reaching significance in increasing the women＇ s status and the quality of people, and also promoting the progress of the society. Finally the custom that the daughter of a sister must marry the son of her brother remains although it was thoroughly abolished almost 200 years ago in some regions.
