Although Northrop Frye and some other people have taken note of The King of the Golden River and its implications for economics, no commitment seems to have hitherto been made to their close analysis. Via a close reading of the text, we can find that The King of the Golden River is, from the beginning to the end, a work representing an alternative pictorialized political economics. Via a vivid story, Ruskin not only accomplishes his definition of wealth and gives expression to his views on moral prerequisites for the acquisition of wealth, but also demonstrates a model of economic activity which sets great store by human sensibilities and affections with all their motivating roles. The ideas concerned are also seen in Ruskin's other works, but The King of the Golden River excels in its vividness and profundity.
