Music is an important element of Duras＇ s literary works. Various musical forms continually appear in her works as a metaphor to express what common words cannot express. There are actual music, such as piano songs and ballets; and also music in a symbolic sense, such as whistle and hysterical screams. This essay attempts to use the psychoanalytical theory to analyze the different forms of music in The Vice-Consul and reveal their symbolic meaning.
