Thomas Hardy, an outstanding English writer, is not only a representative critical realist, but a pioneer in English modernism. Tess of the DUrbervilles is generally considered his masterpiece, which encountered considerable concern in literary criticism since its publication. This paper attempts to analyze the fatalism and pessimistic view of Tess so that a better understanding and interpretation of the work can be achieved.
