On Translating Culture-loaded Images in Chinese Classic Poems

意象是诗歌的灵魂。具体物象的运用是诗人达到其以诗传情之目的所常用之手段。由于意象所蕴含之民族独特性,或许目的语中存在其对应物,然则翻译实践中却很难实现其真正对等。本文着重援引中国古诗英译的一些译例对古诗英译中就此问题进行客观的分析探讨,以期对文学翻译初习和爱好者有所启示思考并予以共勉。

As image is the very soul of poetry, the employment of concrete images functions as the usual means for poets to achieve their purpose of effective poetic conveyance through poetry, whereas due to the unique national traits embedded in the culture - loaded images, it is often difficult to achieve real equivalence in translation practice, even if their counterparts do exist in the target language. The present article thus attempts to take an objective approach to the discussion of this controversial issue in classic Chinese poetry translation by analysis of some typical cases for study, hoping that it could be of some inspiration for the translators of literary works, professional or amateur, experienced or beginners.
