In this paper, Washington Irving's novel The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been analyzed in the new historical perspective. The author sent himself into exil and placed himself in a marginal viewpoint. The marginal culture of the old rural life in the Sleepy Hollow is called upon to subvert the capitalist main stream culture. However, the author's intention of subversion is finally contained by the capitalist dominant discourse and the novel becomes a carrier of capitalist ideology in circulation. Nevertheless, in the wrestling between subversion and containment, the novel actually took part in the shaping of history.
