It is commonly believed that the appellations bo, zhong, shu and ji found in ancient Chinese documents indicate the sequence of brothers' age in a family. This traditional opinion has been challenged by Japanese scholar H. Egashira who interpreted the four items as generation labels originating in the marriage classes system. The present authors provide further evidence for supporting E- gashira's theory. It is from this point of view that the genealogy of the Jin marquis exposed in Sima Qian's Shi Ji seems to be distorted and incomplete, which is just the cause of why the question on the tomb-occupants of the Jin State cemetery in Beizhao has long been unresolved.
