On the Derivation of English Phrasal Comparatives

基于对具体语言事实的观察,发现比较结构和并列结构有着相似的句法特性。从这一新视角出发,提出一种新的解释短语比较句派生的方法:短语比较句是并列缩减操作作用于它的底层从句表达式的结果。

This paper attempts to argue the derivation of English phrasal comparative on the pattern of Chomsky＇s generative linguistic theory. Based on the observation of the data, we find that comparative constructions and coordinate constructions have similar syntactic properties. From the new angle of view, we try to propose a new method to explain the derivation of phrasal comparatives： phrasal comparatives are derived from their clausal counterparts by conjunction reduction.
