On the Inadequacy of Polysystem Theory in Explaining Translation Activities in Qing Dynasty and During the May 4^(th) Movement

本文尝试从清末及"五四"运动期间翻译活动的研究入手,通过引用译者本人关于翻译的论述,探讨翻译目的等译者主观能动性在翻译文本及翻译策略的选择上的作用。由此显现出多元系统论因忽视译者作为翻译主体的主观能动性的局限性。

This article attempts to explore the role of translators in selection of works to be translated and translation strategies based on the research of translation activities in the Qing Dynasty and during the May 4^th movement by quoting the translators ＇ own remarks on translation. It is shown that the polysystem theory is inadequat due to not taking the translator＇ s initiative into consideration.
