现代主义认为,人在现实生活中产生了异化,而这种异化是由于人与人之间的隔阂与崇尚物质主义的生活原则造成的,从而导致现代人生存处境的荒诞和虚无。盖茨比的一生就是这种荒诞、毫无意义的社会的牺牲品,对死亡的选择是其实现自我复归的必然选择。

Modernism holds that human beings are alienated in the social reality, which is the result of isolation and pursuit of material things of modern human beings. And this situation leads to the absurd and annhilistic state of living. Gatsby＇s life can be said the victim of such absurd and meaningless society, thus his choosing of death is the inevitable way of self rebuilding.
