The inaugural addresses of American presidents are not only distinguished by their salient dialogic attributes, but are characterized by a heterogeneous mix of discursive varieties and genres, i.e. the typical phenomenon of intertextuality. The present paper attempts an exposition of the generating process of this phenomenon from the angle of Verchueren's theory of adaptation, aiming at pinning down the underlying reason why linguistic elements of different styles, discourses or genres can exist compatibly in these addresses, without impairing their coherence and smoothness. Meanwhile, this paper is also expected to be conducive to the analyses of other similar discourses.
