Feng You-lan is a patriotic philosopher. His study on Chinese and the Western cultures can be divided into three stages. He interprets it in terms of geographical difference, historical epoches, and social development. In the third stage, he argues that Chinese culture must be modernized and its national characteristics be preserved, which points out the right development of Chinese culture. It is necessary and benifical for the develoment of Chinese culture to analyse seriously Feng＇s thought about the Chinese and Western cultures.
