Among the proliferation of academic fictions in America, Oates＇ s works stand as aunique voice. What accounts for this uniqueness is her successful combination of a writer＇s sensitivity, an academic＇s rationality and feminist values. Beyond mere exposing and criticizing the alienated relationship, hypocrisies and mean self-interest in universities, Oares calls for a harmonious university atmosphere based on care of community. What she is really concerned with is how to soften competition with care and replace coldness with love.
