Point Hegu(LI 4)is of the Large intestine Meridian of Hang-Yangming.It is the most commonly usedpoint in the clinic,as it locates on the hand and is convenient to puncture,with a strong needling sensationand a wide range of indications as well.In the wide range of indications of Point Hegu(LI 4),the disease and symptoms on the face and of thefive sense organs are taken as the emphases.It is summarized in Song of Four Major Points(Si Zong XueGe):'For the face and mouth,Hegu(LI 4)controls'.It is recorded as early as in A-B Canon ofAcupuncture and Moxibustion(Zhen Jiu Jia Yi Jing):'For deviation of mouth,deafness,blockingsensation in the ear and toothache,Point Hegu(LI 4)is applied to treat them'It is said in
Why can point Hegu （LI 4） be applied to treat the problems of ＂the face and mouth＂？ It is mainly because that the meridian reaches the head. According to its running course, the Large Intestine Meridian of Hang-Yangming goes from the hand to the head, ascending to reach the neck, cheek, lower gum and nose, with the addition of its collateral and muscle region, thus it has a wider range of connections. The ＂face and mouth＂ refer to the place where the meridian passes, also the area where the therapeutic effect of the point reaches. It is said in Chapter 26. Miscellaneous Diseases, Spritual pivot （Ling Shu）： ＂For toothache and disliking cool water, the Hand-Yangming Meridian should be selected; for deafness with pain, the Hand-Yangming Meridian should be punctured.＂
