The search for and the construction of self is one of the main themes of Sula. In her difficult pursuit of an independent self, Sula has suffered denials first from her mother, Hannah, then her friend, Nel, and finally her lover, Ajax. But it is these denials that shape Sula＇s life and her hard and lonely search for self. By overcoming these denials, Sula consummates her self-- pursuit journey and constructs her unique self.
