Depth of anesthesia and patients'consciousness status often be covered or become difficult to judge because of combining usage of muscle relaxants and analgetic agents. Anesthetic depth can not be exactly reflected just only by traditional vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiration status, pupil size. Recent studies of anesthetic depth monitoring are focused on cerebral electronic activity such as bispectral index (BIS) of electroencephalogram, entropy, auditory evoked potentials (AEP). This article is to review the value of entropy on monitoring depth of anesthesia with comparison to BIS and outline the recent advance in entropy research.
