"五维度总体性理论"是一种特定的历史哲学框架与文学史哲学框架,这一理论框架是为了对人类社会文化史与文学史进行总体性分析与把握,立足于特定的"理想类型方法"而提出来的。"五维度总体性理论"的基本问题即是对人类社会文化发展的基本规律进行揭示与阐释,并通过相关的历史分期来把握人类社会文化的总体性特质及其流变。在"五维度总体性理论"中,原始时代、古典时代、近代、现代与后现代是依次相序的,但这并不是一种线性序列,于其中存有着复杂的相关社会文化形态、质素及其意向的斗争、更替、延留与创生。在20世纪中国文学史的研究与写作中,理应确立20世纪中国文学总体性特质之混杂性、复杂性与阶段性的观念,通过"近代性历史叙事框架"、"现代性历史叙事框架"与"后现代性历史叙事框架"及其整合进而达成特定的整体把握。
