The Concept and Nature of Performance

本文主张表演是作为口头交流的语言艺术范畴的根本，而表演是一种交流的方式、一种言说的方式。表演建立或者展现了一个阐释性的框架。表演存在于表演者对观众承担的展示自己交际能力的责任中。

Extracting from Richard Bauman＇s influential book, Verbal Art as Performance, this paper argues that performance becomes constitutive of the domain of verbal art as spoken communication. Fundamentally, performance as a mode of spoken verbal communication consists in the assumption of responsibility to an audience for a display of communicative competence. Performance involves on the part of the performer an assumption of accountability to an audience for the way in which communication is carried out. For the point of view of the audience, the act of the performer＇s expression is subject to the evaluation for the way it is done. Additionally, it is marked as available for the enhancement of experience. Performance thus calls forth special attention to and heightened awareness of the act of expression.
