Analysis on the Untranslatability Caused by the Linguistic Structure in Translation

在认真分析英汉对译中因语言结构不同所导致的几种不可译现象,包括词汇空缺、成语典故、拆字、镶字、回文、双关语以及语音现象的基础上,探讨导致不可译现象产生的因素,指出译者只有深层理解语言的文化内涵,明确翻译的目的,努力化解、缩小不可译现象,才能更好地进行翻译工作。

This paper analyzes some cases of untranslatability, including those caused by the lexical gaps, idioms,split, palindrome, paronomasia and phonetic arrangment. It is pointed out that the translator can only achieve his goal successfully by comprehensively understanding the cultural connotation of the languages and the ultimate aim of the translation. The translator should make efforts to narrow down the gap of untranslatability so as to reach a higher level in his work.
