Everyone in life is in pursuit of satisfaction of his instinct desire. However, when various social customs restrict the abreaction of his instinct desire and disallow them to acquire the satisfaction, sufferings are aroused along.Sufferings aroused by suppression of the instinct may not result in disaster;on the contrary, hope may be aroused along with sufferings. In different periods and by different ways, people show the production of sufferings and the pursuit of hope. Then, with different visions, artists record the changing of heroism. However, fantastic heroism established on the basis of modern wars and mechanical ivilization can eventually lead to the destruction of hope,so in artists' writing, modern people' s "American dream" is more often ended with tragedy. This paper attempts to discuss The Great Gatsbv written by Fitzgerald in 1925 to analyze the disillusionment of modern heroism.
