Two blood cell lines (Pcr-S1 and Pcr-S2)from the Philosamia cynthia ricini Donovan were established.Mostof the cells were suspended in the medium,except that as mall number of cells attached themselves to the glass.Round cells of about 9.2-23.5μ in diameter were predominant in Pcr-S1 cell population,but in Pcr-S2 cell population,the most predomin ant were the spherical cells of about 20μ in diamater.The population doubling times of Pcr-S1 and Pcr-S2 were51.6h and 60.2 h,respectively. Although these two cell lines had been derived from the same insect species,they varied largely in their response to challenge with the Pcr NPV.The percentage of infected cells with polyhedra in Pcr-S1 cell line was 52.9% and each infected cell produced 21 polyhedra on average.This demonstrated that Pcr-S1 cell line could be an excellent in vitro system for studing Pcr NPV replication and for biotechnical application as well.
