本文通过对19世纪美国著名浪漫主义作家纳撒尼尔.霍桑的优秀长篇力作《红字》中海丝特.白兰等四个主要人物的介绍及分析论述,探讨研究了这些人物所带有的深刻的道德寓意和各自所代表的社会道德状况。与此同时,该文还对作家的宗教道德观念及其对作品人物创作的影响进行了述评,指出由于作家深受清教思想意识的影响,以宗教的善恶观念来看待世界,主要关心的是人们对待罪孽的态度以及不同的态度所导致的不同的道德内涵。

Through an analysis of the traits of the four main characters in The Scarlet Letter, this paper gives a detailed study of the moral implications embodied in each of them and the kind of moral standard they represent respectively. The paper also offers a brief introduction to Hawthorne＇s religious attitudes and expounds the influence of such attitudes on the portrayal of his characters.
