Zhou Fu and China 's Modern Railway Enterprise

洋务运动是指清政府为挽救统治危机,自上而下推行的一场以引进西方科学技术为主要内容,以富国强兵为目的的自救运动。修筑铁路是洋务运动的重要内容。周馥认为铁路与国家的富强有密切关系,并修筑了胥各庄至阎庄的运煤铁路以及津沽铁路。

Westernization Movement in the latter half of the 19^th century was a reform by the government by introducing Western capitalist techniques to save the crisis of the ruling Qing Dynasty. Building railway was one of the initiatives. Arguing that railway had a direct relation to a country＇s prosperity and strength, Zhou Fu built a railway line between Xu Gezhang and Yan Zhuang to transport coal and Jin-Gu railway.
