The use of protons in cancer treatment in many countries has produced encouraging clinical results. The superior dose localization capabilities of proton beams suggest the possibility of depositing a higher dose into the tumour while reducing unwanted damage to surrounding normal tissues. Proton therapy facilities, the treatment process and their recent developments are reviewed.
