Ken Towle is the first to admit that he has yet to try some of the more exotic foodstuffs on sale at Tesco's flagship Beijing store. But the head of the British supermarket chain's China operations is convinced Tesco has to cater to local tastes. "We are not here to change people's habits," he told British media last year. Tesco entered China in 2004 when it purchased a 50% stake in Hyrnall, a subsidiary of Taiwanbased Ting Hsin International. Towle, who joined Tesco 20 years ago as a bakery assistant, was appointed CEO of Tesco China at the end of 2006.
