Influence of Yin-Yang and Wuxing thoughts on ancient Chinese buildings

中国古代建筑的空间布局深受阴阳五行系统的影响,重人伦、顾大局、重视对建筑的选址和自然资源的利用,如北京四合院的布局和大门的位置安排,苏州园林的山水布局等。在建筑改造中,充分运用阴阳五行系统对待异质事物,吸收可用的异质元素,如中国古代的佛教建筑。

This paper illustrates the influences of Yin-yang and Wuxing thoughts on ancient Chinese buildings from the following aspects ： the emphases on human relations, the consideration of whole situa- tions, the location of buildings and the utilization of natural environments around buildings, and it takes the layouts of Siheyuan （ quadrangle courtyard dwellings） and gates of Beijing and the landscape of Suzhou gardens as examples. In the process of reconstruction of ancient Chinese buildings, especially in dealing with foreign items, the Yin-yang and Wuxing thoughts have been taken into consideration and heterogeneous elements have been adopted, which could be seen from the Buddhist architecture in ancient China.
