胡明复是我国近代科学发展史与科学教育史上一位举足轻重的人物。他早年留学美国,是中国科学社的创始人之一,为科学社的发展和《科学》杂志的编辑出版工作做出了重要贡献。他重视科学的社会功能,宣扬科学方法与科学精神,并且躬行实践,积极投身于科学教育。他为中国近代科学的发展,为中国近代科学教育的推行,做出了杰出的贡献。

Hu Mingfu is a great figure in the modern Chinese history of science and education. He spends his early years in the studies in USA, and helps to set up the society of science. He makes great contributions to the academic journal of Science. So he attaches importance to the social functions of the natural science and practises enthusiastically the scientific education.
