Examination and identification of the earlier pictographs listed in the appendix to the Collection of Bronze Inscription Characters, based on knowledge of the inscriptions on the oracle bones and tortoise shells in the Shang dynasty and the bronze inscriptions in Western Zhou period, reveal that some pictographs were the emblems of some tribes, some represented living scenes of the time, and some others later developed into characters. Of them,(何)、 (伐)、 (重)、 (卿)、 (竝併並并)、 (虎)、 (豕)、 (牛)、 羊、and (策)fall into the third categories.
